Beaver Creek weather tips
Get the most out of your Beaver Creek ski vacation by being prepared. Tips to beat the mountain elements are listed below:
- Bring and wear adequate clothing since the weather can change quickly. When the sun sets or disappears behind clouds, the temperature can drop quickly.
- Dress in layers since this is an easy way to adjust to varying temperatures and stay dry.
- Wear a hat and eye protection since at this eleevation, the sun's rays are more intense.
- Protect your lips and skin. Lip balm and sunscreen are essential - reapply often!
- Drink water and minimize alcohol consumption as Beaver Creek is a high altitude, low humidity place. Headaches are a common symptom of dehyadration.
High altitude tips
Beaver Creek Resort's base area is 8,100 feet above sea level and the mountain summit is 11,440 feet. The altitude's effects can be powerful. The air is thinner with less oxygen than at sea level. To help you adapt to the altitude:
- Take it slowly when you arrive since you might tire more quickly at altitude. Allow a day for your body to adapt to the new altitude.
- Drink more water than usual since dry air accelarates dehydration. Exercise and sweating compoud this effect.
- Don't forget sunglasses and sunscreen since the effects of the sun are about 50% greater than those at sea level. Reapply sunscreen throughout the day.
- Altitude sickness is is a serious health condition and its symptoms are vomiting, insomnia, headache and a fast heartbeat. See the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's web page on this by clicking here.
